    No Audio Device

    Help me please.
    I have no sound. I have just been given a Dell Poweredge SC1420. in which the previous owner had changed the sound card to a unimodem half-duplex audio device. but i have no sound. the system says that the Device is Working Properly but when i check the audio properties under the volumn tab it says No Audio Device. When i Select the sounds tab and try to play a program event (default beep) i get an error message "indows ....... your sound card may be in use" and under the audio tab it lists the sound playback default device as Modem 0 line playback.
    What can i do?

    I believe what you are seeing is the Modem and not a sound card. The PowerEdge you have does not come with a sound card as it's a server and not a home desktop system. What OS is it running? Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP?

    I believe You will need to add a PCI sound card.

    Having said that, power off the system and unplug the power cord. Open it up and remove the existing card you are plugging your speakers into. What is the make and model number (should be stamped on the card somewhere). If not, does it have a FCC ID#. Please post that info here.

    Thanks

    As additional verification of hardware, download, install, and run Everest Home Edition (CLEAN FreeWare) on this machine. Once it's finished loading and running, look under;

    MOTHERBOARD
    Post what is listed for your Motherboard (make/model) and the Motherboard Chipset description.

    Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system.

    Post that information exactly as presented by the program.

    This will tell Ztruker (and anyone else reading this thread) if indeed you have a sound device, and if so, what it is.

    It is running windows xp pro. I can't find a manufactures name but there are two sets of numbers. M356AMB and GQ968. By the way it does have a picture of a telephone stamped on it

    It's sounds like a combination modem/sound card, but without knowing the make and model number, it's impossible to locate a driver for it, if one exists.

    Your best bet would be to buy a new PCI sound card and replace the one currently in there. They are available from the internet for $10 to almost $300.

    Either you do not have a sound device, or, it's disabled in the machines bios. I tend to think the former.

    You can obtain a fairly inexpensive sound card (PCI) if you have an empty PCI slot on the motherboard.

    You're welcome (from Ztruker I'm sure, ;>) and myself). Glad to hear you're "up and running".
