Can't open folders, my computer, mydocs, etc

    Hi Everyone,

I have a strange problem where directories (or i assume windows explorer) seems not to load. The closest thread I can find is this one...

    http://www.d-a-l.com/help/windows-xp...n-folders.html

... but it didn't help unfortunatley.

If I try to open a directory, the little hourglass appears by the side of the pointer for a second or two, then dissapears. That's it. Weired.

The problem does not occur in safe mode.
If I run msconfig and disable all the startup entries, the problem still exists when rebooted.

    Have ran malwarebytes; nothing.
I can't see anything obvious in Hijackthis.

Apart form this problem it seems fine, not going slowly or anything.

    Any ideas?

    Is this a new issue?

Did you try a System Restore?

No, it has been happening for a while apparently. It has also randomly "just started working again" sometimes allthough, I have not seen it work at all since having it.

I have not tried system restore as I'm not sure when I should restore back to or what programs would be affected if I did.

It must be some driver or service that is loading up and somehow getting in the way becasue it wrks fine in safe mode.

It has norton as the antivirus solution, which I feel is a very invasive program. I can "disable" it but it never unloads itself, so I do wonder if it locking a file or something. Maybe I'm just being biased there as I really hate Norton antivirus software.

Should I post a HJT log?

Ok using Regmon and Filemon from sysinternals gives some possible clues (see all those NOT FOUND messages). Unfortunately I don't know how to do anything about it. Any of the moderators have an idea?

I filtered the utilities mentioned for explorer. Please take a look a the attatched screenshots.

If you have any ideas what I could try next, please let me know.

On lines 24-32 of the filemon shown in colour, there is a semi-colon at the end of those directories. This seems to chage randomly to other obscure characters each time I try it.

    SOLVED!

It was that Norton Internet Security Afterall! It wouldn't uninstall properly using its own uninstall things, but Using the Norton Removal Tool seems to have done it.

What use is an antivirus product if it stops you using your computer efficiently. Avoid the bloatware that is Norton, use Avira instead.
