My internet explorer works fine except when i try to go to windows update when it just crashes. I am using win xp with ie8, also tried it with ie7 still the same

From the start menu go to programs, Accessories, find & run Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) [it might be in a subfolder]. Type into the address bar update.microsoft.com.
