    Re: XP monitor problems

No problem. We are here to help.

We just need to find out if it is hardware or software.

If your monitor is failing there is not much you can do short of a new one (or a new used one).

And if it turns out to be the monitor, remember that I suggested you try a different one in my initial response to your question

What resolution are you setting your monitor for (for example 800 x 600)? Does your problem go away when you lower it. Have you tried decreasing the DPI?

    Do you mean dell e773?

You couldn't by chance take a picture of you monitor after it does whatever it is doing? Have you tried Dan's drivers? Does it do this in safe mode? Do you have dual monitors enabled?

For testing purposes we really need you to borrow another monitor to determine if it is your monitor or your computer.

I just took off spybot as my PC was virtually on deaths door it was so slow-now its as fast as ever.
nope i have one monitor installed.and yes its a E773s (sorry)and no all my friends have laptops and have long since departed from there desktop monitors.
all it the problem is the taskbar-it has started recently going back to normal once the PC has warmed up a bit.But other times sinks into the bottom of the monitor.

i have tried updating...system restore twice-nothing.all is left is to reinstall windows Xp pro again-thats my last hope.
i could buy a new screen and it does the same thing-then i'd be mad.

maybe i should join the dell forums?-maybe there is another PC gimp in the same pickle as me

You didn't answer all of my questions. Can you take a picture of it? Does it do the same thing in safe mode? What dimensions are you using & have you tried to decrease it? Have you tried lowering the DPI? Dan's drivers?

If you can't test another monitor on it perhaps you should go with Jephree's suggestions:
    2) Try running Ubuntu in order to test if it is an XP issue

    3) You can also move the Taskbar to the side or top of the screen.

To do so right click it and choose "Unlock" then go back and left click it & hold & drag to the side or top.

When i save the screenshot it won't show up on the screen.

No i have never tried it in safe mode.

width its about 79-hight about 40 on the monitor settings.

i booted up my older Advent pc using the monitor and it was slightly out-not as bad as this xp version.

And yes i can move the taskbar up and down as normal.

it must be the monitor i think.

I meant the resolution settings within windows. Right click on the desktop & select prosperities. Also try in safe mode. Start hitting F8 when the computer is booting up until you get the advanced boot options & select safe mode or safe mode with networking.
When i save the screenshot it won't show up on the screen.
Do you mean the file? If so can you save it somewhere else. Do you have a camera?

    1024&768 colour is 32bit.

if i start the machine in safe mode-all the screen sizes will be diff.the text and letter will be in large settings.

sadly no camera here-i'm poor-hence i can't go out and buy a new monitor.

What about Dan's drivers? What about decreasing the DPI??? After that you might try to increase the resolution to 1152x864. Please also try 800x600 and safe mode. In either case if it asks you if you want to save the changes hit yes unless you lost your picture. I need either a screen shot or a picture because I can't picture what it is doing. To take a screen shot hit print screen [that might be abbreviated], open up mspaint [called paint]. From the start menu you will find it in programs, accessories or you can hit run and type in paint. Hit control + v to paste the picture on the white page and then hit control + s to bring up the save as box. Choose where you want to save it (I would recommend somewhere other than the desktop), change the save as type to jpeg from the drop down menu, & hit save. Please then upload the file for inspection.

So that we can determine whether or not your problem is with windows we need you to download Ubuntu or knoppix. You will need to burn the iso to a disk & boot into it.

So that we can cover all the aspects of your problem please follow all instructions & answer all of the questions. I hate to be blunt but we need you to do that so that we can help you.

My PC doesn't have a dvd/cd writer-so there is no way i can do that.I have pasted my desktop before and when i do it looks like a normal desktop.and they i'll hear that my desktop looks fine-you can't see a problem with it.
The KNOPPIX thingy...i have done a similar thing with with the canadian guy and they never worked.

I will try the safe mode option later on when i get home.

    Thanks
