its all installed and set to automatic through the system management tool and has selectable restore points. i have also followed MS's topic to go to run c drive etc and install the file from the list..........

when i get to the last page (after selecting the date) to select next it won't do anything - the button will animate and highlight but it doesn't work. it sits there waiting for me to do something like the button hasn't been pressed?...........

also disk fragmenter won't work so i think they might be linked? (states " disk defragmenter could not start")

any ideas wil be greatly appreciated.

is there a way to reset the hardrive and wipe all files without wiping xp and also keeping selected software?

As to your last question provided you have a retail Microsoft XP CD you can run a Repair Install. Your data and programs will be preserved but you will have to reload all service packs and windows updates.

If you have a manufactured computer with only a recovery CD or recovery partition then this option in 90% of cases cannot be done as all they offer is a total wipe and factory reinstall.
