Defrag
I have a computer running XP Pro that I am unable to run defrag.
The program will start and after a few minutes it will either freeze up or quit running.
Does anyone have a recommendation on how to fix or a replacement for Windows defrag program?
Thanks for your help.

hi dhwms...
If Broni's suggeston of Safe Mode does not work then you can try "Defraggler". I use Defraggler to defrag all my WinXP PC's and Laptop's...
http://www.defraggler.com/
Before you defrag you first you need to cleanup all the Temp, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, etc...You need to do this for all user accounts
(1) Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp folder
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin. (Note: Do NOT delete the Temp folder)
(2) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin. (Note: Do NOT delete the Temp folder)
(3) Clean out the Temporary Internet files folder for (EVERY LISTED USER). Procede like this...
For IE 6.0...
* Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
* Click Start button, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
* On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
* In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
* On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
* Click OK
For IE 7.0...
* Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
* Click Start button, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
* On the General tab, click the Delete button
* Make sure the following options are checked\selected..."Temporary Internet Files", "Cookies", and "History". The other 3 options, "Form data", "Passwords", and "InPrivate Filtering data" are optional. Once options are selected click the "Delete" button
(4) Empty the Recycle Bin
Instead of the "Manual Method" above you can use a program that I used called "ATF Cleaner". Works very well in cleaning the "crud" from your PC...
