Yesterday I installed an old PC game onto my computer and it froze on me while I was playing. I flipped the switch on my PC and started it back up again but now it freezes before I get to the desktop.
It will get to the Windows loading screen but almost immediatly goes to a black screen and freezes.
If I try to launch any of the Safe Modes the screen will fill up with a bunch of file names the last one ending in system32/mup and freeze.
After this I tried to repair Windows by booting from my XP CD and running a normal windows repair. Unfortunatly if I do it like this it gets just past the Terms of Service agreement and starts looking for previous versions of Windows on my PC and freezes again!
Next I tried running the Windows XP Repair console which brings me to the prompt and asks which version of windows I would like to install. I typed in "1" and hit enter and it froze again!
I also cannot format the computer without running into the same problem I get trying to repair Windows. It starts looking for previous versions of windows and freezes.
I don't know what to do! Is there a way to fix this without buying a new hard disk?
Is this a manufactured computer? If so who is the manufacturer and what is the model?
If it is manufactured are you using the original manufacturers XP CD?
If it is a custom build and you have a full retail version of XP I suggest running KillDisk then try to install again.
Of course KillDisk will remove all data from this hard drive:
http://www.killdisk.com/
It is a custom build and I only had an XP upgrade. I have since bypassed the problem via buying a new Hard Disk and a copy of Windows Vista. For the most part everything is working fine.
The one problem I'm having now is that Vista doesn't recognize my USB Flash Drives or my Morespace Portable Hard Disk. Whenever I insert these into my USB it tells me I need to install the drivers. Since I don't have any drivers for either of these products I'm at a loss for what to do.
Both my flash drive and the hard disk work fine on my office PC (which is running Windows XP) and I know for sure that my flash drive did work on my PC prior to this whole debacle and I have never installed a driver on either of these PC's.
This makes me think the problem lies with Vista (big surprise).
Anyone have any ideas? I've already sent an email to the company that produced my Portable hard disk.
A guy at my work told me that I need to reformat my PC and reinstall Vista on a NTSF partition instead of a FAT32. I'm gonna try it when I get home but I was never given this option during the original install; After Agreeing to the terms of service Vista installed all by itself.
*Sigh*
Why does everything have to be so difficult!
:bs_lame:
What is the make and model of the motherboard?
If you don't know run Belarc and post back just the make and model under motherboard or mainboard:
Belarc .................................................. .
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Vista installs on NTFS. It would not install on FAT.
Anyway the drivers you need are for the motherboard and they may or may not exist for Vista depending on the board.
DOH! You know while I was stressing over finding better drivers for my ATI Sapphire and pulling hair out trying to get my surround sound working again I completely forgot to install the drivers for my motherboard!
I'm an Idiot.
I'm not sure what the make and model is off the top of my head but assuming the drivers I have (I still have the CD that came packaged with the board) work, thanks for you help Jephree!
If it doesn't work i'll be back with plenty more annoying questions on how to fix it without buying a new board. :P
Thanks again man!
No problem. Let us know how it goes.
Ok, my motherboard is an Nvidia 590 SLI AMD and the drivers that came packaged with it aren't compatible with Vista.
However a quick google search got me a Vista compatible version of the drivers.
At this point I have downloaded and installed the drivers, restarted the PC twice, and I still can't access my Portable Hard Disk!
Here is a link to the drivers I found on Nvidia's website:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_...sta_15.01.html
Guess I'm stuck... again!
The company that produced the hard disk sent me an email walking me through a way to get my computer to recognize the hard disk. Unfortunately it was a written with Windows XP in mind and even if it wasn't that isn't the problem I'm having.
My computer recognizes the Hard disk, it just will not let me access it!
It shows up in my device manager with a yellow exclamation point next to it and it tells me the drivers need to be installed, but like I said earlier there are no drivers! It does not show up in My Computer as a Removable Drive (which it does in XP at my office)!
In the email I received he says, "There are no drivers packaged with this product, it is a plug and play device."
Starting to run out of patience with this whole thing.
1) Have you tried letting the Device Manager search for drivers for you?
2) Can you verify in Services that all Plug & Play service are started and set to automatic?
3) Can you verify in BIOS that all Plug & Play options are enabled?
In the Device Manager: Where do you get the yellow ! ? Is it under "Disk Drives"?
Do you have any issues under "USB Controllers"?
Does the drive show up under Disk Management?
