virus sending me to bad sites

Just got on my computer and it had restarted itself and there was a little white X outlined in a red circle. I knew that something wasn't right so I searched for a free antivirus download. Found a website and clicked on it from google and it sent me to some weird site that was telling me to download their anitvirus. I again, knew it wasn't right so I tried other websites and it kept on doing the same thing. It never took me to the same site though. here's one it took me too

Tried to download hijack this and it didn't work. Tried to install it and the only thing that showed up was the exe file and it wouldn't start up because nothing else showed up. Any help at all???

    Hello,

It sounds like the virus you have has modified your hosts file and this is re-directing you when you try to connect to sites that have software that can remove it.

Try rebooting into Safe Mode with network support. Hopefully this will keep the virus from running while you try to get the files you need to fix the problem.

You will probably need to edit the hosts file before you will be able to connect to any of the real anti virus sites. Have a read at the following link to find out where the hosts file is kept on your system. You can edit the hosts file with a text editor like Notepad.

You will then need to discover what virus or malware you have and eliminate it. One program which works well for this is Malwarebytes. Get it here -

Hope this helps, later, Ray Parrish
