My computer as started to occasionally make a sound like a telephone does when its left off the hook.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening please.

Just thought I would add the noise is coming from the tower and not from the internet connection it still happens when I turn off my internet connection.

Just read that Dan Penny is moving home,and thought maybe the inside of my tower is dusty as we have just moved home and have been doing a lot of revamping,and my husband would not think about covering the computer,so I took a look, and the fan as well as everything else was really covered in dust, so just given it a delicate vacum, hope I have now solved the problem.

It would be worthwhile downloading the HD diagnostic utility for your respective HD from the manufacturers website and run all the HD diagnostic tests for starters, as that doesn't sound healthy at all.

If the test comes back with a negative result, backup all your important data to CD's/DVD's or an external HD, etcetera and invest in a new HD.

If it doesn't, open up the case when the machine is on, carefully, using an anti-static wristband, ensuring that you ground the wristband, prior to touching any part of the interior, and locate where the noise is coming from exactly. Could be your fan telling you it's ill.

Report back on your findings ASAP, smithy.

The problem resolved itself after I gave it a good clean,the fan was smothered in debri.............will keep an eye on the inside of the tower from now on.We have done a lot of DIY and my husband never thinks to cover my computer properly.
