My father-in-law has a XP system, Automatic updates are turned off. try to click to turn on, nothing happens. go to windows update website and get error code: 0x80070422. try resolution #1 on the site, but doesn't work.
try to turn on automatic updates through Start/Run/services.msc, and get error code:1058 could not start the automatic update service on local computer.

Check the Hardware Profile environment for the user on the machine. There may be required devices (LAN/NIC, etc) which may not be enabled/associated for the action within that profile. More info;
