Thumbs down Can't access some internet sites

    Hi,
I am having a problem with my computer in that using IE or Firefox I can only access some internet site. I can't get on yahoo.com but I can get on hotmail. I can't get on myspace, but I can get on the BBC site.

THings seem to be completely random.

I have ran various virus and spyware scans that alerted me to a few trojans that I have since got rid off. Any new scans don't show anything. All of my software is up to date.

When I try to use system restore I just get a prompt saying my system could not be restored.

ANybody got any clue? Thanks a lot for reading.
    Joe

Even though you have isolated a possible virus it may have already done the damage. You should do a more thorough cleaning of your system. Remove temp files, cookies, and other caches, including your modem (unplug for 2-3 minutes to flush). Look at your installed IE components and BHOs. Disable if they look unfamiliar. Also, unchech everything in your startup in msconfig (run from cmd - msconfig). You can always go back and recheck items that you discover you need. After this, if it doesn't help, try uninstalling IE and FF, and reinstall. Let me know how this works.

    "EDIT" Add:
IE add-ons: go to internet options>programs>manage add-ons. Not sure about FF.

Have you checked to see if either your virus or spyware software is blocking the sites? You're modem may be block sites as well. Try to narrow down the type of sites that are being blocked. visit a number of sites and see if there is any pattern. Also, try to ping yahoo.com. go to cmd: ping yahoo.com see what you get back.

    Thanks.

Well, social networking sites and internet search sites are generally not working. I tried to ping y\hoo but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

    I got the following
    packets sent - 4, recieved - 4, lost 0.

Even when I have internet security turned off I can't get on these sites

Your ping shows that you CAN reach yahoo.com. This just helps to isolate the source of your problem. I'll be back in a few...have to take off.

What does it report when you go to a failed website? Should give you a cause or an error number.

I don't get any error as such - the page just stays white and never loads.
