    Question windows media player

my windows media player stopped working...when I restart windows I get the "windows found new hardware" message and it gives me a choice to install it...it's saying there are no drivers for it...I didn't uninstall the drivers. I don't know where to get the drivers since I don't have the cd.

    windows xp professional

    Welcome to techhelpforum.

my windows media player stopped working
    Which version?

when I restart windows I get the "windows found new hardware" message and it gives me a choice to install it
Hmmm. WMP is a software element, or utility, not hardware.

What does Device Manager say about your machine? Any "errors", warnings, exclamation marks showing? If so, against what hardware?

it's saying there are no drivers for it...I didn't uninstall the drivers. I don't know where to get the drivers since I don't have the cd.
If XP came preinstalled on the machine, there should be a i386 folder containing any setup files/drivers which may be needed for installations of either hardware or software. Most of the file extensions will indicate compressed files. ie; Filename.ex_, Filename.sy_, etc.

Drivers for media player ? Thats a new one..I think its just the Windows default media player that comes bundled with XP. Perhaps its install location not found rather than hardware not found ..

Correct. My last statement was only to illustrate that compressed setup files and drivers for anything which may be installed in the future should be in an i386 folder if there is no XP CD with the machine. (Pre-installed O/S.)
