Updating drivers with XP
This isn't so much a problem than it is strange. I ran PC Pitstop's full test on a friends computer the other day and it suggested that I update the video driver and provided the link. Now, I trust PC Pitstop as it has never done or suggested any changes to my computer that hurt it in any way, so I downloaded the driver and installed it. The second I installed the driver, Windows XP crashed big time! (Blue screen error message, complete freeze up) Then I could only get Windows to load in safe mode. I tried rolling back the driver but it wouldn't, so I ended up doing a system restore from 3 days earlier, which did work. Did I do something wrong with the install or was PC Pitstop wrong about the driver?
The computer I was on:
Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 3800+ dual core
* 2.0 GHz
* 2000 MHz system bus
* L2 cache: 512 KB ×2
Memory: 1024 MB DDR2 533 MHz (PC4200) (two 512 MB modules)
Video: Integrated NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100 graphics
Up to 128 MB of shared video memory

Most of these "driver-check" programs (not just singling out PC Pitstop) will tell you there's a newer driver available. Drivers are being developed/updated all the time. However, most of these "updates" are minuscule, and not always that accurate. You may have got an incompatable driver for that machine.
Also with nVidia drivers, the last/prior one must be uninstalled and A-V turned off before the new driver is installed. http://www.nvidia.com/object/driver_...ion_hints.html
If your machine is performing as expected, you don't need to update drivers. About the only time you may require an updated driver is when a piece of software (program) requires it.
