I am using XP Home on an ACER Aspire 3000 notebook and recently installed a driver to support a USB-to-serial bridge connector, since when, my laptop has ground to a halt. I also installed some drivers for the device I am trying to connect to during which I had to select from either port 3 or 12 (any significance?).
The touchpad mouse and keyboard are now so slow as to be unusable. I uninstalled the 2 sets of drivers and rebooted but the symptoms remain. However, if I reboot in Safe Mode, the laptop works fine (with obvious limited functionality).
Grateful for any advice on how to troubleshoot this problem.
p.s. would buying a registry tool like RegCure be worthwhile here?
Many thanks..
Hi,
Just to share progress: I got impatient and bought RegCure to try to resolve my PC-freeze problem. Has made no difference whatsoever..
Welcome to techhelpforum.
How old is this laptop? I can't find a 3000 model listed;
http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/index.html
I did find specs;
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/acer...-31532504.html
Is this what you have?
Can you either roll back the drivers to what they were before, or, perform a System Restore to a point prior to the immediate problem?
Download and install Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare)
Connect all applicable hardware to the machine, then Run Everest. Once it's finished loading and running, click on the Report Wizard in the Menu Bar. Save all hardware related pages (the default) to a TEXT file in a location of your choice. (It will default the location to C:\Program Files\Lavalys\EVEREST Home Edition\Reports, unless you redirect it.)
Compress (zip) the text file and attach that zipped text document to your next posting.
(When posting, click on Advanced, and just below the posting box you'll see "Additional Options", and within that, "Attach Files". Click on "Manage Attachments" and follow the prompts. Browse to the file and choose UPLOAD.)
Hi Dan,
The laptop is 3-4 years old and is a 3003WLCi.
I have attached the Everest downoad as you suggested.
Very many thanks...
I found your (factory) drivers here;
http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acerdr...TOKEN=10438034
I would load all the drivers with the exception of the bios and Winflash. This should bring your machine back to factory specs. Then the ancillary devices and their drivers can be loaded.
Post the make/model of the device you are try to incorporate. (ie; Port 3 or 12)
Dan,
There were 15 driver/updates listed from which only 6 actually worked (downloaded and installed). Afraid the problem persists...
Thanks.
From Everest and Google search I got this far;Post the make/model of the device you are try to incorporate. (ie; Port 3 or 12)
http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/Products-2.asp?ID=10
Dan,
It is a Prolific RS232 USB-to-Serial bridge converter - Model:URS-101232
Straight after I installed the driver for this, I was then able to install the software for the device I was hooking up to (a Snooper Evolution GPS device).
I can't recall for sure at which point the laptop decided to go slow then give up; i.e. after the first or second install.
Thanks again..
Found it: URS-101232
From what I read at http://www.smtxgo.com/English/Produc...?ProductID=151 and in the installation guide, drivers are only required for Win2000 and below.
I take it you uninstalled the driver via;
Uninstalling the Driver Program
If you want to remove the USB-Serial adapter driver program, you can uninstall it by following the steps below:
1. Unplug the USB-Serial adapter from your PC.
2. Run the DRemover98_2K.EXE program from the software CD-ROM, then reboot the PC
3. Click “OK” to continue
4. Click “YES” to continue
Windows ® will restart
With these two "problem" devices disconnected/uninstalled from your machine;
Click Start, Run, copy/paste "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe" (with the quotes) into the Run box.
Once it's open, click on File, Export. Save it as a text file (the default). Zip (compress) the text file and attach it to your next post.
(When posting, click on Advanced, and just below the posting box you'll see "Additional Options", and within that, "Attach Files". Click on "Manage Attachments" and follow the prompts. Browse to the file and choose UPLOAD.)
Dan,
I previously uninstalled from start menu options. This time I ran from CD as suggested in your last post. Problem persists.
Sys Info file attached as requested..
Cheers.
