    Plug And Play

    My Dell Dimension 3000 has stopped recognising new devices being plugged into USB ports. It sees there's something there but cannot load drivers. The same devices work ok on my HP machine. Anyone help please?

    Welcome to techhelpforum.

    Firstly, open Services; Start, Run, type in services.msc and hit ENTER.

    Ensure the Plug and Play service is running. (Status = Started). It should be listed as Startup type: Automatic.

    Secondly, open Device Manager; Start, Run, type in devmgmt.msc and hit ENTER.

    Are there any yellow exclamation marks or other "warning" type notices on or within the Universal Serial Bus controllers branch?

    If so, post what you find.

    If not, Right click and Uninstall all the items below the Universal Serial Bus controllers branch.

    Exit and restart/reboot. This will initiate the HAL process and find the hardware and (newly) assign resources, drivers, etc.

    If this doesn't help, check that you have the latest;
    1. Chipset driver

      VVV Chipset Driver direct download VVV

    2. Bios

    If the above bios is of a later/higher revision to what is on the machine, download the above but don't run it until we know where we are.

    Post back with your results and any further questions.
