Computer Freeze, what to do, what to do? ugh

My computer continues to freeze (lock up) frequently. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2. I have always stayed current with Windows updates, etc. I have run virus and spyware scans that come up clean. The computer will boot up fine, then for some reason it just locks up frequently at random times...no mouse, no keyboard, no CTR-ALT-DEL, etc. In safe mode the computer is fine (does not lock up).

After doing the best I could with my own troubleshooting I have a feeling it may be an operating system problem. The lock up happens erratically - meaning it doesn't just happen when I use one certain piece of software.

I pray I do not have to reinstall Windows, ugh.

First time here. I am out of answers...a real bummer. What would be the first step in troubleshooting?

I have actually checked the fans (processor, etc.) and they are working. This has to be a Windows issue or a problem with my motherboard/bios. So many possibilities.
