    Windows Update Help

Hi, a few days ago I swiched my computer on to find that it would not boot as a file was missing or corrupt in my system config (whatever that is).

Windows advised me to use the original cd and repair windows which I did. To my surprise everthing was back to normal - well almost. Everthing worked fine the way it did before this problem, except I noticed that all the windows updates were gone.

I went straight to the windows update site and found I needed 91 updates around 81 critical. When I click install the updates I keep getting the message Failed updates and they don't install.

Windows update worked without any problem before I did the repair windows using the installiation cd.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I've tried to download these updates five times without any luck.

    Cheers Jim

Go into your control panel and go to add/remove programs, click to show all updates as well and scroll down and make sure all the windows updates are not there. If they are then get rid of them and try to re download them.

Hi Steve, I've done this (there was about four). Still no joy.
Now it wont even let me download and install the improved / updated windows installer. It let me do this a few days ago.

    Any other suggestions?

    Cheers Jim (from bonny Scotland)

Have you tried the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool?

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility performs the following functions:

    • Provides a dialog box in which you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer

To do this, select the programs that you want in the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.

    • Removes the files and registry settings that make up the Windows Installer configuration information for programs that you select
If you use this utility to remove the Windows Installer configuration information for your program and you plan to reinstall the program, you should reinstall the program in the same folder where you originally installed it. This prevents duplication of files on your hard disk or disks.

I downloaded the program and started to install but noticed that is said Microsoft Office Update.

I don't have ms office installed do I still use this program?

Sorry If this is a stupid question, I'm not very tech minded.

    Thanks Jim

    Shoot. Sorry, no don't install.

"When I click install the updates I keep getting the message Failed updates and they don't install."

I (now) seem to remember that within the above message there's clickable links for "the reason" and there it tells you how to "clear things" to allow the download.

    Is this correct?

Be aware that IE7 taxes your machine a bit more than IE6 does. Expect slower response unless you have a fast processor and decent amount of RAM.
