    Hello, and Welcome to techhelpforum.

    Can you boot the machine into Safe Mode?

    If so, go to Start, Run, type in chkdsk /f c: (if C: is your O/S drive. If not, adjust the drive letter accordingly.)

    If this fails, boot into Safe Mode again, and in the Run box type in fixmbr.

    Post back with your results.

    Boot the machine with your XP CD.

    When you're told to "Press any key to boot from CD", hit the Space bar.

    At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, press r for Repair.

    When the machine is done loading, type in;

    Chkdsk /f

    When it's fininshed, try booting normally.

    If it still won't boot, repeat the above, this time type in;

    Fixmbr

    Thanks again , but still no luck, once u load Cd in and hit space bar, went into windows xp set up the blue screen, where it would load drivers well it locks up and stays on the screen, and nothing happens, i got it into safe mode, and locked up again and restarted. any other ideas? would be great. im now thinking i might not even be able to reload xp on it, i could NUKE the hard drive but idk.

    thanks ahead of time Joe

    At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, were you able to press r for Repair?

    Is the machine booting from the CD? ie; Is the CD set as the first boot device in the bios?

    If you know the make of hard disk in this problem machine, I suggest you test it;

    Hard Disk Analysis Tools - Major manufacturers

    They have floppy and CDROM image files, some of which are bootable utilities.

    Is there a floppy drive in this machine?
