Emachine with Problem
My Emachine with XP turns on but nothing else happens.
The Fan runs, the fan to the motherboard runs. A red led is lit on the motherboard, the little light that tells me ,normally, that the hard drive is entering data is lit but not blinking. I am unable to get either of the two dvd trays to open. Any idea, what is wrong?

Dose your computer boot at all? Do you get the BIOS? Do you know what type of hard drive, ram, processor, motherboard that sort of stuff do you have? Don't worry your in the right place. We can help you here and will get you up and running in no time!! I will look and see what I can start coming up with, so keep checking back as often as you can.

Emachine
S1862 AMD Athlon 1800+ XP Processor
60GB HD Ultra DMA
256 MB DDR Mem
Was running it on Verizon FIOS
I removed the Hard Drive and hope to see my friend and check out the HD very shortly. I purchased a new puter Gateway with Vista on it. Sort of afraid to open it up for fear of voiding the warranty. They have a seal on the back and don't want to break it.
Thanks for responding, Oh, the Bios does not come up at all the monitor comes up and then very shortly it goes into sleep mode since the Bios or HD don't do anything. I am not very good with computers as you may see.
Trying to think if I have a bad motherboard, would I be able to purchase a new MB say from Tiger Direct and be able to fit it in?
I know the speed of the MB is 1.3 Ghz and really slow by todays standards but it moves fast enough for the wife to play games if I get it fixed.

You can buy a new motherboard from Tiger Direct. You can also buy a new one with a new processor for fairly cheap. I know that you can get a combo for around $80CDN. That comes with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor at 2.2GHz. Now with that one you would have to buy a fan for it as well. But if you just want the motherboard then they are around $50. I would suggest spending the extra $20 or $30 and getting the new processor as well. But it is ultimately your choice. Keep us updated on your progress and don't forget if you have questions about installing the new motherboard and/or processor then don't hesitate to ask. I have also posted direct links to the Tiger Direct Canada site, if you need the American one just change the .ca to a .com.

Steve, I was wondering if motherboards are standard size and will fit into my Emachine? If I buy a "combo" as you say, that is the motherboard with processor chip and fan already installed? Have always bought computers that were complete in the past so this is new to me.
There are possibly 2 areas that are bad, the Harddrive or the Bios on the motherboard, is that right?

Yes they are all one size. You can order special sizes but Tiger Direct carry's the one size. If you buy the combo you will get the mother board and processor and it depends on if you get a combo with an OEM processor then no you don't get the fan but if it comes with a retail processor then you will get the fan. The hard drive could be fried. If you know someone that has a computer that is working right maybe they could bring you there hard drive and that will tell you if its the hard drive or not. But it sounds like it might be the mother board if your bios is not booting at all.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...MP=ILC-FPM-CMP . Okay, the processor board as indicated has OEM at the end, is this all that I need with this replacement, does it include the fan or is that extra? I sure don't want to order the wrong thing and get stuck with sending it back.
I changed the .ca to .com and the price came up the same. Must be the Canadian Dollar and Ours are at about the same value.

Before you go off and start buying things,,,,,
Are there any beeps when you boot this Emachine?
Do you get any display output at all?
Can you hear the hard disk spinning?
