after dowloading a virus program
My McAfee icon was dark so I went to site and re-downloaded and installled newest version of Virus scan pro. After installation I returned to the internet and started having big time problems. First off, some info: My ISP is msn. I have windows XP. Fully updated. Use windows explorer. Connect with MSN6
When I tried to bring up my mail through MSN's mail & more I get a quick flash of the download Page, then it tells me mail host dll. is missing. I followed MSN'/s site instructions and my computer tells me I do not have permission to access this file. (I am the primary on this computer) All e-mails to MSN have not been answered. Have been trying for 3 weeks.
Also when trying to download any file the download manager will not appear even if I click on it. Please help. My daughter and I use this computer every day for her school homework.

You might try a System Restore to a point prior to your problem:
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
-
Did the system restore and all **** broke loose. Went back 2 weeks and restored. Now I have no virus protection and no system restore to undo the change. What happened"? Also tried getting on the net in safe mode but It won't let me.
-
Can you access Safe Mode? If so you should see the option to Undo the restore.
Also what is the make and model of the computer?
What type of XP CD do you have?

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes I did go to safe mode and when I tried system restore it restored a mess. Nothing worked. After restoring there was no more restore or un-do functions showing. I finally did a system restore. As I have only dail-up it took me 3 days to download all update it will let me install. Still can not download and install updates for Office 2003 that was on original installation. The download manager and mail worked for 2 days them went back to the same problem as before, will not show download manager for or during downloads and keeps telling me that I am missing mailhost files.
My computer is a Compac Presiro S7300CL and the recovery disks I had to copy on original start-up.
The Office 2003 updates I need for my daughters school work.
I'm at my wits end and knowledge's end about what to do.
Microsoft is no help and will not reply to any e-mails for help!
Any suggestions"?
Thanks for the help you have given.

Computer:

System Recovery:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...404610&lang=en
You will see two options for Recovery here. The second option is Destructive and will delete all data setting the computer back to factory condition.
If you did not try the first "non-destructive" option already try that first.
If Office 2003 was a bundled package then you should have received or created recovery disks for it as it is not a part of XP.
Anyway review the HP options and ask any further questions.

I did the first option, the less distructive one and the 'puter seems to be fairly stable, but I still have the same original problem of having no download manager nor am I able to access mail thru MSN. I am using MSN 8 and when I try to update to the newest MSN It will not let me get past the log on screen so I revert back to the MSN 8. Microsoft will still NOT answer any e-mails about these problems.
Thanks for your help so far.

any ideas about the missing download manager and mail in msn?

Have you tried call Compaq? Maybe uninstalling Macafee for the time being and putting in AVG and letting it do its thing and seeing if you have a virus would work!
