Enter the BIOS Setup and set the Boot Menu or Order so that the CD drive is set prior to the hard drive.

Then restart and when you see a message to press any key to boot from CD press any key.

    how involved is this process?
Vista help only speaks of starting from a windows disk.......i'm guessing this is not the same process.---"insert disk, then restart"

When the computer first starts the hardware is run by the BIOS. (Basic In Out System). This is before Windows is ever involved.

Most computers use the Delete key to enter the BIOS Setup.

You might see on the lower part of your screen just after power on "Press Delete to Enter Setup". A very few manufacturers use F2 or F10.

Once in the BIOS Setup look for BOOT options.

This should all be in the manual as well. What is the make and model of the computer?
