    bad hard drive

After replacing bad HD, I am trying to retrieve data off of old drive. Have a USB enclosure for drive and tried hot plugging and computer would not find slave, so tried freezing HD and replugging, computer recoginized the drive as mass storage device, but with a yellow warning icon, went to device manager and had a message devise cannot start, code 10. Tried to hot plug again and computer went to blue screen with message, a problem has been detected and shut down windows to prevent damage to your computer, also said plug and play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver. Any suggestion as to what I might try to retrieve files or what problem could be. This has been a ongoing problem with this HD and since I have nothing to lose since the data is lost unless I want to spend $600 to $1000 dollars to retrieve, I will try most anything. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Stan

    Code 10 = No driver

But XP should not require USB drivers.

In an USB enclosure the drive jumpers should be set to Master.

Another try would be to install internally as a slave.

If the drive is mechanically non-functional about the only way is to remove the disks which would be your $600 to $1,000 method.
