    I hate my computer =/

Ok just kidding, but I hate all the problems it has... I would appreciate trying to get it back to normal. Heres a hint of advice, dont leave your computer running when you go on vacation, because your friends will use it to go to janky porn sites that infect your computer. Anyways, some background on the computer.

So heres the problems I have:

Runs slow as hell using more than 1/3 of its memory.

Wont read either of my DVD drives, Drive E: was the DVD drive that came with the computer, F: is a brand new LG DVD-R I installed.

My system restore is infected with recurring trojans that are spotted several times a day by AVG 7.5.

There is a virus of some sort called iEshAz, or something, AVG has not found it, I only see it when I shut down the computer, pops up the end program dialog and thats all I see of that. Im sure its the reason Im getting popups in internet explorer once in a while saying my computer is infected (yeah that is why the window your showing me is there). Happens every single morning at 3am exactly, and at random other times during the day. I tried uninstalling Iexplorer, but of course there is an error in doing so.

So what I would like help doing is:

    Uninstall Iexplorer permanently.

Clean out my system restore of the recurring trojans.

Get my DVD drives to work.

Figure out why its running so slow using 1/3 of the memory.

    Thanks in advance.

turn off system restore, reboot the machine into safe mode (press f8 when booting), run AVG. to clear the Trojans from sys restore, then follow instructions >> HERE <<

you've only got 448 MB of RAM a bit more would helps speed things up a bit

another thing u can do is, go to run, type in msconfig, and remove any unneeded startup programs

As to the DVD/CD drives try this:

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...cd_dvd_fix.htm

You cannot uninstall IE. It is an integrated service within XP.

Did you get the computer cleaned out of malware and viruses?

You should also add SP2 and all Windows Updates.

Are you saying your RAM count is off @ 448MB? This would indicate 512MB with shared on-board graphics using 64MB.

I dont know if I can add SP2. I dont know what your asking me about RAM either, sorry.

Here is the performance of my computer most of the time. When the commit charge gets above 250k it starts running slowly.

If I cant uninstall IE then how do I get rid of the recurring popups that neither AVG or hijackthis can find? I only use Firefox and have tried to get rid of IE through remove programs and it says that there was a problem.

SP2 is under Windows Update via > start > All Programs.

If your copy of XP is legal then you have no problem.

I would first off clean out your current system. But then the first thiing afterwards install it. It contains nearly 3 years of security updates as it came out 3 years ago.

Using Windows Update makes my computer freeze and I have to reboot.

The link for the DVD drive also did nothing. =/

I tunred off system restore and pressed F8 while rebooting but had no option to use a command line to run AVG.

You should get a reply to the log within 24 hours.

What is the exact Presario model number? Do you have your Compaq Recovery CD's?

S6200CL I suppose. Negative on the CDs, I dont see how they would work with "non-existing" CD drives anyways. I would rather not lose everything on my computer as far as music movies and pictures. I dont have the money for a new hard drive and if I cant install a DVD drive and get it to work, what are the chances of a new hard drive.

    Thanks for your replies.
