Computer Runs Slow!
Hey guys new to the forum here so if i make any mistakes let me know. This is a long post i know.
I've had a HP laptop dv6045nr for about a year now and recently noticed it starting to run sluggish...normally it's a hit or miss everytime i boot on whether or not it will run efficient or sluggish...sometimes its fine other times its not...
only has about 10 gigs of space left on the HDD, which very well could be the problem,...but it has run normal with that much space left on the drive a before. If it is the HD let me know what i should do and tips on defrag...windows wouldn't let me defrag due limited amount of space.
So my concern isn't with the HDD i dont think. At boot up software like SpySweeper, Trend Micro, and chat freeware Trillian(only cause i never liked aim) run very slow. Also during normal usage and not at boot up ill open my Task Manager and watch the CPU usage and see what's dragging it down. Usually it'll be some process associated with the anti-virus software mentioned above. The computer has 2 gigs of RAM so should be good there...running XP SP2...havent upgraded to Vista..im sure they're still working kinks the out...
i run other software such as CCleaner and SpyBot SD which seems to work most of the time( i keep an eye and make sure the files these two get rid of arent associated with other Anti-Virus Programs) but ran them recently and they just cleared a few cookies. any insight? any other info needed hit me back. Thanks!

AVG is a good AV and very unintrusive compared to others. And FREE!
How large is your hard drive? Can you move some files to removable disks?
Since you have 2GB RAM you might try turning OFF your page file which is a process where XP uses your hard drive for memory space. These options are found via: Right click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change > No paging file > Set

Thanks for the reply...120 gig hard drive....i was able to clear up alot of disk space by going through and deleting a lot of stuff i didnt use. ill try what you mentioned about the page file process. i went and tried to defrag again after i cleared the unused files and it told me i didn't have to defrag that partition. hah. Ill try what you said and a few more tweaks ....it seems a little smoother since i cleared up and deleted a lot of stuff....could just be my imagination though. haha.
