Constant cycle of blue screen - then restart.

    Hi,
    I have a problem.
When I shutdown my computer by pressing the power switch (a game made windows hard lock) last night, and I start it this morning and I start windows, I get a brief display of a blue screen, then it restarts.
I've done a chckdsk /p and /r and these haven’t fixed my problems.

I found a resolution in windows knowledge base - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174630/en-us but I don't see how editing the registry on the new install will fix the things on the previous install.

Is there anyway to fix the error?

Please note: I cannot get into windows at all.

I have done a search on google, and it came up with things not specific to my error, things such as a scanner causing the problem. I'm in a network with a scanner and computer, I detached the network cable but this also didn't fix the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help,
    DrewG

Boot your XP CD. Choose the first R to enter the Recovery Console.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Here try the following commands (1 at a time rebooting between):

    FIXBOOT

    FIXMBR

    BOOTCFG

    Also:

    Fixboot didn't work.
Fixmbr can damage my partitians (should I go ahead anyway)
And bootcfg requires additional commands - such as bootcfg /default. I'm not sure which one to use as I am a complete noob to things like this.
I will try the knowlege base article you suggested and get back to you.
Thanks very much for your help,
    Drew.

EDIT: I can't do the things in the article you suggested as I don't know how to login in the recovery console I type "logon" space "password" but it doesn't do anything. How do I login as administrator? It says access is denied when I try to do the "md tmp" thing.
The thing is, it doesn't ask for the administrator password.
I am running SP2 and using the original windows professional CD.
    Thanks.

Sorry I did not see your edit as I only get notice of New Posts.

The entry to the Recovery Console should be the same as when you tried FIXBOOT:

    1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
    2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
    3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
    4. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

.............. anyway just as a worse case scenario if your data is important you can slave this drive in another computer to extract the data then return it to continue repair operations.

The simplest answer might be to just run a Repair Install which "should" retain all your data, settings, and programs. Of course backing up very important data is always suggested.
