Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.
Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors in CD-ROM.
Event Viewer details here:

hi again,Ive checked application and found a red X every time I started my computor, application hang brian b89,catergory 101,event id 1002
help Crt.exe.version5.1.2600.2180 hang module hangapp version 0000,

The error that usually indicates a bad CD-ROM is under System > CD-ROM
Can't get much from that application hang except something is trying to start and cannot. You might try double clicking the line for more details.
What burning software do you use?

checked under system, found error service control maneger event 7031, is this of any help tosolve the problem, birdman

The error should indicate a particular service but I doubt it has anything to do with the CD-ROM.

I would try uninstalling any burning software that you have installed and see if this helps.
Also at some point trying a different DVD/CD drive would be worth it.

hi again, just tryed a cd in the cd rom,and it turned the computor off,and it re started again on its own,is this a indication that the cd rom is no good, the dvd rw is in perfect working order, birdman

Try the following and if the first doesn't work go to the next.
1) If you have any burning software installed uninstall it. Reboot.
2) right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager then click the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drive. Then right click the particular drive and choose Uninstall.
Then reboot the computer.
3) Do the same as in #2 but expand (+) your IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers then right click the Secondary IDE channel and Uninstall and reboot.
