I just downloaded Registry Mechanic and ran a scan. It found 227 errors, of which it was willing to clean up about 20.

Should I register and buy the full version, reinstall XP, run for the hills, not worry, take a sledgehammer to it, reformat the HD and start from scratch........

Do nothing. The first time you run a Registry Cleaner it will find hundreds of entries. 227 is quite low actually. These are not errors per se just unused entries and or residue from deleted programs.

If you really want to clean the registry RegSeeker is a decent free tool as well as is CCleaner.

OK, just sounds like a lot. I'll have a play with one of your suggestions if I feel like it.
