There is an armature on the left side of the socket in this picture that secures and releases the processor.

You need to remove the heatsink/fan first. There are usually four thumbscrews to do this. Actually from the above picture I see two clips on either side of the CPU bracket. Intel uses 4 screws.

You also need to clean the old thermal grease from the heatsink and apply a new dab of it to the new CPU.
