    Partition not detected

I have three partitions on my seagate hard disk which i can see in 'My Computer'. But whenever i try to save any file or try to browse in any program, i am able to see only two partitions,i can't browse third partition (i.e. E:/).
My operating system is windows XP.

    Look in your Disk Management:

(right click My Computer then click Manage then Disk Management).

Is the partition listed there? If so what are it's properties and status?

In disk management, all three partitions are visible. Third partition is shown as healthy (page file), but when i right click on it and click properties nothing happens, no property window opens. other two partitions easily shows their properties window.

Is the Properties line "greyed out"?

Where does it indicate "Page File"?

Is this a new issue? Were you ever able to access this partition?

Do you know if your Page File is set on this partition?

To check Page File right click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Performance then Settings then Advanced then Virtual Memory

What is listed under Drive and then Page File?

Properties line is not greyed out,its black but doesn't work for drive E:/.
Page file is indicated under status tab (for both D: & E: drive), for C: drive it is healthy(System). Page file is not set for E: partition which i confirmed from Virtual memory window as you have mentioned

    Is this a new setup?

Were you ever able to access this drive/partition?

I am a bit confused by the Page File mention as I do not see that with this setup I am using:

    Its not a new setup?
I m still able to access this partition in 'my computer' or 'explorer' but whenever i try to open a file from this partition in a program like notepad, MS word or any photo editing program, the partition doesn't show in browser window.
earlier i was able to access this partition from any program. File system is FAT 32.

Just to verify: You've made no changes since a time when you could browse this drive from other programs and now?

I see a possible issue in the fact that your name is on the drive. If this is also the name your computer uses for itself this might be an issue. Of course if it worked this way before then that is not an issue.

I will keep looking about but so far that is the only issue I have found.

    hi jephree,
thanks for your replies. My name is not the name of my computer. Infact i changed my drive name only on 8/3/07.
Today i changed drive letter from E: to G:and it worked for me. Now i can access all three partitions in any progarm. Kindly give your expert comment on what could have possibly been a problem.

 I am glad you got it sorted out.

I've lost the document I was reading but it had to do with the drive name being the same as the domain name on a network or server hence the browse feature was unable to locate the drive as it stopped at the first instance of the name.

If changing the name (or letter) started and stopped the issue I would assume that somewhere in there was the problem. As you can see I'm not all that much of an expert. Just trying to help.

If I dig it up again I will post it but glad you got it sorted out!
