I am having trouble installing MSWord 2000
Hello:
I have a computer that came with Windows XP Professional pre-installed as the operating system. However, it did not include an office suite. I tried to install MS Word 2000 from the cd but am having trouble. The cd loads fine, but about half way in to installing word I get a message that says something like: "to finish installing word please insert Windows XP professional service pack 2 CD". The prompt that comes up has a heading of "Windows File Protection" and then has a message to insert the professional service pack 2 cd (I'm sorry I don't know how to save this as a picture). As XP was pre-installed I do not have this cd. I tried to hit cancel to see if that would work, but then I get a message that says "This is the wrong cd (the MS Word CD)." I also did a folder search for i386, and pointed at several folders, when this message came up, to no success. I have tried to install MS Word a couple of time, with the same result. I have a different computer that has Windows 98 and I install MS Word just fine off the cd. What's equally frustrating is that I am able to download and install pretty much anything (such as open office) on the Windows XP computer, but apparently I cannot install microsoft's own product off a cd. And it's not the cd or the drive that's the problem as I am able to download something (like I did with open office), put it on a cd, and install it off the cd (just not ms word apparently). Kinda defeats the purpose of having this kind of security for xp. I would just use open office, but I like Word and need it for a possible job. Any suggestions?

Do you have SP2 installed?
If not you should get it from Windows Update.
If you do have it installed you can still order a CD from Microsoft for the shipping cost. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that what I don't understand. The service pack 2 was pre-installed on the computer, so there shouldn't be any problem. And I did the windows update also.

I think I figured it out. So I am closing this message.

Sorry I haven't checked this for awhile. I was able to get a service pack 2 cd for xp. I reinstall sp2 from the cd. After I did that, I put in the Word cd to install it, and this time it worked no problem. Weird. I'm still baffled that I had so much trouble with microsoft's own product, and yet can download and install (from a cd or usb drive) pretty much anything that isn't microsoft on the computer with ease. If the computer hadn't come with XP I probably just would have stuck with Win 98.
