startup problem

startup problem
When I reboot or startup the computer,I get a 'check file system C:' telling me that there is an inconsistency with one of the drives.
One time I let it finish the test with no problems
Now I stop it ,but it slowly finishes the startup and I have no sound.
This happens every time I startup or reboot.
I scanned for malware and viruses, none found.
Can you help?

1. click on your start menu and open the run dialog.
2. type "cmd" and return (note: don't enter quotes)
3. Next type "fsutil dirty query c:"
4. If the return message indicates that the volume is dirty go to step 5
5. Next type "chkdsk c: /f /x"
6. After that finishes repeat step 3.
7. If it is no longer dirty then reboot and you should notice no more ckdisk.
If you still have no audio you probably need to reload the drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. The drivers will be on their web site under Downloads.

Thanks for responding to my problem.
I did what you said and found that the volume is dirty but when I did the check disk operation it said it "cannot lock current drive" and the drive is NTSF.It also said that the "volume was in use by another process" I'm not sure what that would be.
thx.

Sorry I didn't mention that you need to reboot.
You will get the notice: Do you want to run chkdsk on next boot Y or N?
Type Y and enter and restart the computer.
The /f flag should fix the drive and the /x flag will turn off chkdsk from re-running.

hey jephree, Thanks for your help, problems solved even got the sound working.
There was another minor problem as well, the working offline window keeps popping up asking me to either work offline or try to connect, how can I stop this from happening?
thx.

Do you lose your Internet connection? Are you saying you have to constantly reconnect or is it a faulty error message?
-
most of the time it's a faulty error message, sometimes after my home page comes up it says I need to connect to the internet because the page is not available offline

As long as you have no off-lines files and or web sites that you want to save you might try removing all off-line files and or web sites.
You can do this via Disk Cleanup:
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
