When I go to the start menu and click "shut down" the window pops up that lets me choose between "log off, shut down, and reboot". Initially when I clicked the shutdown or reboot button the window went away and nothing happened.

I then went searching online and I read somewhere (dont remember where) that on Toshiba laptops (mine is a Satellite A-85 1072) the Fn key and Power Saver applications might interfere with shutdown/reboot. That website suggested uninstalling and reinstalling should fix it.

I did that. Now the computer starts the shutdown/reboot process and it freezes on the log out screen. I wen't to the add/remove programs portion of the control panel to try and uninstall and then reinstall the 2 applications again and the programs were not listed.

The only way that the computer can be fully turned off now is to hold down the power button (which I dont want to do all the time).

I found a way to force it to reboot using the "tsshutdn" command after using start->run->cmd. Using this command will start the shut down process as well, but then it hangs on the log out screen.

Oddly enough, the hibernate function works just fine.

Any suggestions on how to get the computer to shut down without holding the power button?
