suddenly, this started to happen: it doesn't matter wich option is selected, 'open each in the same window' or '..in its own window', it will ALWAYS open in its own window.

it's set to open in the same window, but it alwas opens in a new one.
what do I do?

As it is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem.

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
