Text boxes in Windows XP
All of my text boxes in Windows XP are X's and squares and lines and brackets. This happend after I uninstalled my dicionary, uninstalled memorex nero and reinstalled memorex nero. I have turned off, unplugged, taken battery out and put back in and restored through help and support. Can anyone help me?

By restore through Help and Support do you mean System restore?
Try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
By text boxes do you mean Notepad and or WordPad?
If so what is the encoding? Check that the encoding is ANSI.

Unfortunalty I cannot do System Restore. I cannot read the words next to the files in All Programs, even the words in my tool bars.
By text boxes I mean any writing in the Microsoft Program. Including all Word documents, the writing in the banner in my screen saver, the words under my icons...ect. Perhaps the term "text boxes" is not an accurate description. I am not very computer literate, my apologies.
In addition I have no idea how to check "encoding", unless I can follow icon pictures, I have no idea even how to check for ANSI.
No only are we dealing with computer problems here, we are dealing with computer operator problems. I am pretty much a "tell me what button to push" computer person.
Thank you so very much for trying to help me!

Press these keys in secession hold each as you continue:
Ctrl Alt Delete
Click Task Manager if you see it.
Then click File then New Task Run...
Then type: %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
If you got this far then you have System Restore. Choose a date prior to your problems and Restore.
If this all fails let us know. I have seen this issue before I just need to dig through my archives.

If the previous reply did not help here is a followup:
Try booting into Safe Mode options:
After the power-on and BIOS POST or your Logo screen repeatedly tap the F8 key or hold the Ctrl key before Windows starts.
Choose Safe Mode with Networking
Then open IE and go to the link below:

Follow the instructions at the top of this page on how to run the edit.
