Hmm I think there's something wrong with your RAM? Windows cannot load all the startup programs because there's short of memory.

Did Advent supply you with Recovery Disks?

to be honest i cant remember whether they did or not . ive put everything in a safe place which is so safe i cant remember where lol. and in any case would not be much good due to cdrom/dvd not working after dropping something on the keyboard right above the cd rom .it was one of those things that ye always going to get fixed but never get round to it( guess whos regretting it now ? ) i was wondering if i could download a recovery disc from windows website onto floppy disc?

You can get the 6 floppy boot setup disks here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

Make sure to get your proper version: e.g. XP Pro SP2 or what have you.

This will take you to the Recovery Console:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314058

I would try chkdsk /r first.

    If that doesn't help try:

    FIXMBR

    Or next:

    FIXBOOT
