Any new hardware or software since last week?

Try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Also if the problem persists can you describe in more detail what you mean by: "files from different user accounts (i have three me nd family) have been getting deleted and everything disapearing"

Is this an old computer? Do you know the manufacturer of your hard drive? If not look in the Device Manager start Run... devmgmt.msc

Click the (+) on Disk drives and what do you see listed?

what i mean by three accounts is that my brother and sister and i have different logins however i didnt install any software last week i'm not sure if i have a viruse or not but my computer has been a little bit out of order things disapearing such as microsoft progams etc.... just today all my files and pictures got deleted and three weeks ago it happened to my brothers account and the only person that has files is my sisters account and when i ran devmgmt.msc and click (+) it had
    IC35L060AVVA07-0 AND OEI-USB CF/SM/SD/MS USB DEVICE

i really wanted to know if there was a way of getting more disk space on my computer and its not an old computer its atleast 1-2yrs old now
would it be recommended if i bought a new windows xp software and rebooted the computer or ist here another solution?

You have an IBM/Hitachi Hard drive.

    Here is a diagnostic tool:

    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

With this you create a bootable floppy disk that will diagnose your hard drive.

As to your XP question: was XP pre-installed on this computer?

If so what is the make and model of the computer?

    Do you have Recovery CD's?

You can try that hard drive diagnostic but I would suspect the Operating System (XP) is very corrupted.

Can you contact your friend and ask if you or he/she have the XP CD? You will also need the Product Key to Repair or Clean Reinstall XP.

In the mean time you can try to run check disk:

    Try running Check Disk:

    start Run... cmd

    Type:

    chkdsk /f

When asked if you want to run on next boot? Y or N?

    Type: Y

    And reboot,

This will check for and fix any hard disk errors.

Let us know if this helps at all. If you have any very valuable data on that drive I would back it up to CD's or another drive ASAP.

The latest main upgrade to Windows XP was (Service Pack 2) SP2.

Since then there have been at least 30 additional upgrades (updates) via Windows Update. You will find this from start All Programs > Windows Update.

I think what you are wanting to do is to Repair or Re-install XP. To do this you need an XP CD. If your friend that originally installed XP did not leave you the CD then you would need another CD. You will also need your Product Key.

If you are thinking about buying a new version of XP I would suggest waiting till January as Windows is then offering its' latest Operating System: Vista.

You can either buy Vista or I am sure the price of XP will plummet significantly.

All that being said your friend who installed XP should be your first contact. He/she should be responsible in offering you the Repair/Reinstall CD.
