NT Shutdown - 60 Seconds
Hi.
Now I know what you all might be thinking, 'ah this guy has got sasser or msblaster', but I wish it was that easy.
Recently my girlfriends uncle has asked me to upgrade his PC from Millenium to XP, which I did. On it I have installed NAV corporate (live updated) and an up to date version of ZoneAlarm. I am currently on the 3rd format of this PC because EVERYTIME, after a few boots and a few connections to the net, the NT Shutdown box comes up.
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
I consider myself pretty experienced in computing but this is a new (and annoying) problem for me.
Looking forward to some advice
Ben.

thanks, can someone ban him please.
Any REAL advice?
Ben.

Try a 'clean install' (you didn't mention whether you clean installed or not) as opposed to upgrading, using the XP upgrade disk, as per the following link and then install AVG free and Kerio Firewall as opposed to Snorton Norton.
IOW, delete all partitions, create new one/s, format and then clean install using the upgrade XP disk.

See what transpires.

I personally would first go the route of finding out why rather than trying fix after fix.
Here's what I would do:
When that comes up again, go to start, run, type in cmd and hit enter. Then type in shutdown -a. That'll abort the shutdown. Then open up task manager, click on image name (sometimes you have to do it twice) so it sorts a-z. Then look for lsass.exe running as SYSTEM. If it isn't running, or is running as the user you are logged in as, go to file in task manager, run, and type in lsass.exe. See what it gets run as or if it even runs. Does the shutting down window come up? Has this PC been connected to the internet beyond downloading Symantec updates? If so, you may still have blaster or similar.

Thanks guys.
All installations were through using clean installations and the Symantec updates were run from my house through a router, and i'm 100% sure it didn't get them while at my house.
I will try the lsass.exe tip, thanks
Ben.
