Windows XP with New Computer
I got a new computer yesterday with Windows XP Home installed, plus a Celeron 3.06 processor and 1GB DDR400 Ramm and 200GB HDD all new. I started it up and shortly after getting to desktop screen, a pop up box came in and said "system has recovered from a serious error" and then rebooted itself. Thru many different restarts, error messages ranged from "File missing or corrupt: c:\ Windows\system32\config\system" to "PFN_List_Corrupt". I installed a CD Drive into the computer to reinstall Windows from the Disc that came with it. It was still wrapped in its plastic and brand new. I booted from the CD and it had many problems with the install, ultimately I got it to start the install process and as it was copying files over it had many messages of different files that it said "not copied correctly", files with names such as "activeds.tlb" and "dmdskres.dll" and "autodisc.dll", etc. Does anyone have any ideas? Or is this just a bad copy of Windows Xp for whatever reason?
Thank you for any help.
Ryan.

Very strage. You say you just bought it? I would take it right back into them and exchange it for a new one. For the preinstalled Windows to fail on first boot, and the install to fail is strage.

I agree with Rob. The alarm bells are ringing loud for me on this one.
With the operating system not working and the install failing, i would suspect a defective Hard Disk Drive :?
