first of all its a self built amd 2. gig 1gig of ram xp i recently noticed when my computer boots up it was rather slow, at the screen where it shows del to enter boot menu it would hang there for 10 or 15 seconds, then i installed a new ati video card. well worked the same way for about a week or so, now my computer hangs at the boot up screen for almost 5 minutes until booting all the way up and sometimes when it gets all the way on it will reboot again. now, i think im having a driver problem but i'ved rolled back and deleted all hardware devices and started over, i've never had much luck with ati video cards this is the second one and i figured i would give them another shot. ive udated that card with all the latest drivers, .. is the driver problem my problem??? next question. i tryed to just do a windows repair and to my dismay i recieved a admin password login that i dont have on my computer and never set one up to begin with... so i will want to know how to get around that problem if it will just take care of the other one.. thanks guys for all your help in advance. ron

Hi Ron,

This could be many things and not just your video driver. Your boot sector "could" be damaged, it is hard to tell going by only what you are saying.

Before trying a repair, have you tried to go to start->run->sfc /scannow
****please note the space between sfc and /***
Have your XP disk ready. Tjis will activate windows to check your files are all correct and not corrupted, and will fix any that are in need.

After doing this please go to Microsoft and update any critical files that may need reinstalling. This is important!

IF you need to do a repair, try just hitting the "enter" key on your keyboard when you get to the non existant admin password. Do not type anything in there.

If all this fails, please download this small file and post your results. It may help us to see if you have anything that has known conflicts on board.

Also, have you done recent scans for malware, spyware, etc and anti viral scans, both your on board AV and an online AV scan?

It does not hurt to cover all bases when something like this is going on.

Even if I cannot help you, this will set things up so that someone far more experienced can point you in a direction that will help.

Hi Ron,

One thing worries me at first. I cannot see an installed Firewall, and I cannot see an identifiable Anti Virus installed. There is Anti Virus mentioned, but which do you use, if any?

Ok...your Nvidia is a known problem causer if it starts at bootup. I run on NVidia but have it disabled at boot time

Go to start=>run and type in "->msconfig"=>click ok

On the startup tab, disable anything associated with Nvidia. [NvCpl etc]
Disable Yahoo Messenger.
Disable Nero
Disable Java [jusched]
Disable Real Player
Disable any Music Players...Quicktime etc Music Match

Disbale anything you see that is NOT system required, other than Anti Virus, MS Office [this used to be better disabled, but is not now], Firewall......no windows firewall is not enough if you have no other.

Now one other thing......when did you install IE7??? Did the problems also come about around then? If so, would you consider temporarily uninstalling through add/remove programs.

Clean out your Windows\Prefetch folder.....yes, delete the lot in that folder.
Clean your temp files, defrag, and see how the system reboots.

I am presuming you have a lot starting up at start time; if you don't.......my apologies. But some programs like to log themselves back on again after a while, and Yahoo and Quick time really do this a lot.

After this, please go online and run an anti viral scan.

This may not sound like much, but Nero alone is a trouble causer at startup, and AMD does not like NVidia at start up a lot.

oh yea, it was doing that before i installed ie7 but after using it a little i think im gonna let it go, just not my thing yet. they need to improve it i must say.

Glad things are better, but one thing I meant to mention; please disable your "guest account". This is a security precaution. You can always make a new account as a limited one, but having a "guest account" open is too easy for the nasty hackers.

I hope you disables Nero from startup, it is so unecessary and truly is a slow down at boot up time.
