    help!-XP can't load Desktop - explorer.exe file prbolam

hi everybody, yesterday i reset my computer and when windows loaded it couldn't load my desktop. well that thing hapenning only in my user (which is the administrator) & doesn't do any problam on any other xp user.

when entering my user there's a MSG that explorer.exe needs to get closed since it finds a problam loading up. when you ask for details it shows:

    AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: comctl32.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2600.0 Offset: 0001f215

i tried "restore last system run" option but it didn't work, i also tried installing explorer again but it didn't help either. the last thing i tried is runing "error doctor" program which really found lots of errors and repaired them but didn't help with the main problam of the desktop

i'm using now task manager to open and run programs i need but can't realy stay in this situation. note that iexplorer.exe runs ok but the file explorer.exe which is in "windows" folder doin' the problam

    please HELP !!!

explorer.exe is just that, your windows explorer. It has nothing to do with Internet Explorer. Apparently something has happened to said file. You could try to repair it using a Windows cd, however your best bet here may be a reinstall.

    Good luck,

    Hiya sony

You could try going to start>run and typing sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc). This should launch the system file checker. From here sfc will scan your system and attempt to rpair/replace any damaged files.

If this deos not work you might have to perform a Repair Install of Windows XP.

    Hi,

I would guess that if you shut down incorrectly or before the computer had completed a task (just a guess) that your best option may be to do a repair Install.

However, I would try clearing the CMOS first to make sure something is not messed up in there. Some times in that area, some startup option gets altered and then it can't read properly, so by clearing CMOS, you take it back to default settings. I must tell you that it is a long shot, but what can you lose before trying either a repair install or a complete re-install. If it were mine, i would clear the cmos first to see if that helps, then if not move to the repair install.

    thank you guys for answering.

first of all i don't have a task bar so i "start" menu is not avaible at the moment but i'll try to run the sfc scaning.

    about the CMOS,
ok, well since i'm not that good with it i need some instruction how do i clearing the CMOS. in addition in case it won't help i need to know what does it say a "repair install". will i lose some files using it ?

    thanks again

You won't lose any files/folders etc with a repair install. You will lose any Microsoft updates though. You'll need to go back to Microsoft update and reinstall all the updates.

ok. but, something i can't understand:

there must be an error in my xp user only. since in the other users there's no probblam at all. does the dll file do the problam ? i just can't understand why it happens only in my user.

Sony, it could be that your account is corrupt and you need to back up all the data for that account and make another.

This still does not explain an explorer.exe problem.....but it could be that your corrupt account is causing errors in that system file.

I agree with Vidster on running sfc /scannow. Try running it in a different account which has Admin rights.
