hello, im new to the board, recently some adware called "spy sheriff" found its way onto my computer, one of its dumb methods of trying to get me to use their product was changing my wallpaper on my destop to a giant picture of one of their ads that read "Your computer is infected!"....once i finally got it off my comp the desktop was all-white and the fix didnt work for me, when i go to display properties -> desktop the list of backgrounds is shaded and i cant select any of them, when i go to display properties -> desktop -> customize desktop -> web it only has 'My Current Home Page' listed and the delete button is shaded so i cant click on it, and that is where im stranded so any help would be much appreciated.

then follow that up with spybot, ad-aware scans. Along with running the ccleaner program from www.ccleaner.com

microsoft anti-spyware program (can get it at microsoft.com)
ewido anti-malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
trend micro anti-spyware (trendmicro.com)
etremover http://www.simplytech.it/ETRemover/

i'd probably run all of those programs in safe MODE to ensure it was removed
