The original problem in this thread Jazzman, concerns Spy Sheriff ( which I believe I have gotten rid of) and not being able to change my background. I have run adaware se and Panda and have gotten rid of the bad stuff and I could not find any of the files that you listed above. I was not able to find a resolution to the problem on this forum. That is the reason I am writing to you. Did you solve this problem? I have enclosed the log file from adaware se. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Originally Posted by jazzman

Tyler,
Thanks for the reply!
When I change the background in the display properties window, the background that I want appears in that window but when I hit the "apply" button, the screen blinks and nothing happens. Also, when I move the arrow cursor from the desktop to any window, the color of the desktop (white) changes VERY SLIGHTLY!!!
Very Strange...
Chuck
Right click on the desktop -> Properties -> Background - > Customize Desktop -> Web...
Is anything in here that shouldn't be?
i have the same problem my desktop seems to be locked... can't change the backgrounds and this happened right after a program called spy sheriff came onto my computer
SOLUTION:
click on link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg
and when it asks u to merge registry click ok
and REBOOT COMPUTER and you should be able to change ur background

Sorry to take so long to get back. To review, I am not able to get rid of the white, unchangable desktop background after getting rid of Spy Sheriff (with your help!). You may have noticed the message by Qrazi3BoO which refers to the bleepingcomputer site. I tried this and it did not work.
I tried to execute your advice but right clicking on the desktop brings up a menu different than you described in your last post. Clicking on the "properties" brings up a screen called properties. Among other things in that window was a field called "address" which contained "C:\windows\web\desktop.html". I figured that this file was causing the problem and I searched in that folder and on the entire hard drive with no success. I have reached a dead end.
You may want to post a HJT log, Chucks. I'm not too sure why it would be doing that.

Go to Display Properties - Desktop Tab - Customize Button - Web Tab....
If security is checked. delete it...this has worked many times
Secondly, you can check if this system32.dll is on your system
its probably in one of two locations:
c:\windows\system32\system32.dll
c:\windows\system\system32.dll
and delete it.
Sorry I didnt answer the email, i have been swamped..
Jazzman,
Your display properties - desktop tab - customize - Web tab advise worked!!!
Can you tell me exactly what happened there? What is that Web Tab screen for?
Thanks for getting my desktop back!
Chuck
Jazzman, I have been trying for weeks to get my background back. Your solution worked, and it was easy! Thanks a million.
