onboard CMedia sound problem on XP

    Hello all,
I recently bought Creative Inspire 5200 5.1 speakers. I have a ASROCK K8Upgrade 760 GX Mother board and AMD Athlon 64 2800+ processor 768MB RAM and Windows XP SP2 OS. I had to re-install the onboard audio drivers and configure it for 6 channel sound output. I could get audio from all speakers. But it worked only for 20 minutes or so and then sound went pfft.. completely off...no software was able to play any sound. even system sound files were not being played. I tried dxdiag and it also dint play any sound. I restarted the system and i could get the sound again. but when i played sound for sometime it went off again..the interval of sound playing before going off is random ..rather i dint notice it precisely...but arnd 15-20 minutes. i went to C_Media website and downloaded latest drivers but still it doesnt work. i dont know whats the problem and i cant even watch any movies coz the sound goes off in some time...can anyone help me out? also i cannot play need for speed....as soon as i start the game it hangs in the opening frame.
i am not sure as to what is causing the problem whether its the drivers or something with windows Xp...please help..

    Regards,

    Hiya ksujeet
This isn't something i know a lot about so i'm just going to throw a few ideas for you to try.
My first response (and one you've probably already done) would be to run full antivirus/trojan/spyware scans.
Then i would look at task manager to see if there are any surges in your processor/Ram etc when the sound goes off. Maybe something is overloading your system?
Try installing the k-lite codec pack. If that doesn't work, try the vlc media player. This little player plays almost everything.

If none of this works i would then be suspecting a possible corrupt file. Try running sfc /scannow (note the space) from your run box. This will scan your Operating System for damaged/corrupt files and repair them.

If the problem persists i would then be taking a serious look at my hardware.
Hope one of these ideas help

    Hello all,
Thanks for the replies.....i did not uninstall the old drivers but i simply updated the drivers....i also updated it using windows updates and the new driver is dated 20th may 2005 and is signed by microsoft. I scanned my computer using ad-aware and it found one dialer saristar.dll which i had deleted but still the problem persisted.

i am doing the OS scan(sfc /scannow) which vidster suggested right now. will post the results later. but scanning for viruses and trojans and latest drivers dint help/dint solve the problem.

I noticed that if many applications are runnin and i am using winamp or some other software...the sound goes off quicker...in case winamp or media player ios the only software running it runs for quite some time befoire conking off....

once the sound goes off i cant hear ssound from any software....can that be because of faulty codecs..?????

    Thanks again for the replies,

    Sujeet

Hmm I let one of the people who was helping you before solve your problem .

But faulty codecs will cause it not to play at all, and not even that one second.

If your still having no luck you could start investigating the DirectX route. Looking around the net it seems that DirectX is a problem for people running games etc.... and the symptoms are the same as yours. The page Here explains it a bit more.
It may be a case of having to reinstall your DirectX.
This page helps with troubleshooting sound problems including installing the latest DirectX http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;812394

    Hope it helps

    Hello all,
i read in one of the links vidster provided that reducing the amount of Hardware Acceleration in dxdiag sound tab and then increasing it thereafter by one level until the sound works will help. i am trying it out at present but none of the other things worked including scf /scannow. I have the latest version of directX ( DirectX 9.0 C ). I read the symptoms and they pretty much look the same as my problem but the only solution applicable to me is reducing the hardware acceleration. If i reduce hardware acceleration to 0 or basic acceleration, then there is no sound from my satellite speakers and centre speakers( i get sound from only 2 speakers ) now i have increased to Standard acceleration and am testing it...will post the result after some time...

Thanks again for all the help provided....

Any other solutions?? its a shame that i am not able to use my brand new speakers...( will buying a new sound card help????( say Audigy or something like that...)

    Hello all,

I had reduced hadrware acceleration to standard acceleration but still the sound went off after some time. Now i have tried everythng and i dont have anything more to try. i ran SpyBOT search and destroy and it found nothing malicious. i ran ad aware and it returned zilch and also mcafee. i have a feeling it has something to do woth the onboard sound card. I think the onboard sound card uses the processor or something like that and hence it overloads and the sound goes off....( forgive me if is dont make sense ) . so if i have a PCI sound card or an external one will it solve my problem. If it wont then thats anorther investment down the drain( along with the new speakers....since i cant use them... )

    Any suggestions??

    Regards,

    Sujeet

P.S : I posted my problem in three threads before i gooogled on technical forums and found this one....i liked the quick replies that i got....inspite of my problem not being solved thanks A LOOTTT!! for sparing some time....

It sounds (no pun intended ) like it could be a problem with the sound card ksujeet
I don't think a basic sound card would cost much but it is always better to try and beg/borrow one from a friend before committing yourself. At least then you'll know if it is the sound card that is the problem.

Your observations about the processor being overloaded may be spot on as well. It makes a lot of sense
PS. Did you try the acceleration at the Maximum setting as well?

    hello vidster,
actually as i said ..i made acceleration zero and i dint get sound from all speakers( apparently u need Hardware acceleration for 5.1 speakers) then i increased the setting to basic acceleration even then no 5.1 sound only 2 channel soound....in standard acceleration i got 5.1 sound but then the problem persisted and in extreme acceleration also the problem persisted......i guess i will have to borrow some sound card and check whether it works fine with that....

    Regards,

    Sujeet
