Missing hard drive space

Missing hard drive space
I was in the process of installing Service Pack 2. It got about half way thru when it said I didn't have enough space to install it on my C:drive. My C:drive is 10GBs with 3GBs free.
The weird part is now I only have 700MBs of free space left instead of 3GBs and SP2 wasn't even installed.
I went into my C:drive and added up the file sizes, including hidden files, and it only added up to about 4GBs. I have no idea where the other 5GBs of hard drive space are. If you guys/gals have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Although, I don't know the exact percentage, but Windows takes up a good amount. They then "Hide" this space they have taken so you don't know. It's the OS, dlls etc. I'm not quite sure also on all the other files. I will see if I have any more information. If anyone else does, feel free to post

Hello mac2pc :-)
Tyler is right about there being lots of hidden files and fragments etc...in windows. For example, there is your page file to take in to account, your restore points that have built up and the temp files.
I would do some housekeeping and try to free up some of your lost HD space. Here's what i would try first:
Empty your temp folder: Go to Start>Run>TYPE: %temp% >OK> Delete everything in this folder.
Delete Restore points: Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties. Select system restore. Now turn off system restore and reboot. Go back and turn system restore on again. Note: You will loose all your restore points at this stage!.
Run Check Disk (to be on the safe side): Start>My Computer>Right click on C drive and select Properties>Tools>Error Checking, and follow the instructions. You will need to reboot your pc.
Delete Temp Internet Files and Cookies. If you don't do this regularly, they can take up quite a lot of space. Start>Control Panel>Internet options. Delete your history, cookies and files (including off-line content) from here.
Defragment your HD: Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. Don't bother analysing as it sometimes tells you, you don't need to when you do. Just select Defragment (I do this 2 or 3 times in a row, only the first time will take a long time ;-) ).
After running full antivirus and spyware scans you will be ready to go ahead and try again. You should also have more HD space too.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on

One question? Have you "Norton Protect" on your PC? If so, empty the norton protected files.
