Ok so you are using the XP laptop to provide internet service to the Vista desktop? And you are connecting the desktop to the laptop through the ethernet port? On the host go into network connections from control panel. Select the ethernet port and the wireless adapter, right click on either, and select bridge connections. This is on XP. On the desktop all you should have to do is enable the ethernet port. Note that this connection will only work when the laptop is on.
