Smile 'attempt to access invalid address'

I have an old program called Carlton (patience) suddenly stopped working. I have re-installed it, accessed it from a different drive but get the same message:
Carlton.exe - attempt to access invalid address?
What can I do to get it back, please?

We need more information. First off we need information on your computer make/model, processor, ram, operating system, etc. Second what is that program, what is it designed to do, and what OS is it designed for. Have you ever gotten it to work on that computer? If so what have you done to your computer since the last time it worked?

    dear townsbg

My o/s is Xp Home sp/3
    4gb memory
    commodo firewall
    spyeraser
the above software has been on for a while
I have been using Carlton.exe for years - and it has been on this computer for at least 2 years.
I did 'clean up' a few days ago
I restore from before that time - but still nothing.
I deleted and reinstalled (though its a standalone) and extracted it into a new directory - but nothing.
As it is quite old, I wondered if a dos.dll (one of the winsocks) was deleted by the cleanup??
If you need more info please ask

    any ideas?

Well I need to know what exactly you mean by cleanup? What step did you take? I need you to confirm that was it working before then. I also need to know what the program does and what OS it was designed to run on. In addition how did it run on that computer before. Also have you tried disabling your anti-malware software and firewall?

    Sorry!
It ran well before on all the computers I put it from laptops to desktops
It is usually extracted into a directory and works easily
The cleanup was m/s disk cleanup
as I said it has been on this computer for 2 years with no problems, and with both windows 98 and xp. It has been on the XP o/s for 1 year with no problems
I have not installed any new software recently
yes, i have turned off the firewall, spyeraser, and spybot and nothing!
I would say that it was originally for window 95 or 98, but has worked on XP and Vista successfully.

How does to run on your computer? For example does it run in a dos window? What does that program do? I ask because knowing that might give me some insight as to what is going on. What options did you have checked when you ran disk cleanup? Browse to the program, right click on it and select properties, click on the compatibility tab, check Run this in compatibility mode for: and select windows 98 from the drop down.

    hello
it runs in the windows environment - like a normal patience program, on a green beage background
On carlton properties I tried compatibility for 95/98 but nothing -- fact I tried all the variations
    from disk cleanup I had:
    all checked
    except offline webpages

Carlton seems completely compatible with in the windows environment, I thought perhaps that the cleanup had delpeted vbrun files or something similar
as it seems to be working from one directory, I assumed that it was using nothing from windows system files

windows 3.1 is older than 95 and runs on dos. How programs run in memory has changed so much since then that I don't even how it ran previously on XP or how to advice you to get it working again. Basically Windows 3.1 (and earlier) as well as its programs ran in a way that newer versions of windows now restricts so I don't know how you ever got it to run. It is because of this that I don't think that 3.1 programs are compatible with newer versions of windows. The only thing that I know to advice is to try to run it on dosbox however I've never had to configure it so I can't tell you how to do so. The program seems to be running in memory in a way that windows doesn't like.

What do you mean by this? Disk cleanup shouldn't have deleted windows files.

Sorry I don't know how to help you any further; perhaps someone else will.

    hi again
I found out it was written in Borland's "Turbo
    Pascal for Windows" v1.5.
    does that help?
I tried dos box but it works in a dos environment and excludes windows
