You need to boot the CD, not start it while XP is booted.

Place the CD in the CD drive, then restart the computer. Watch for a message that say "Press any key to boot from CD". When you see it, press the Enter key. That will start the install and you will be able to delete or format the existing partition.

If you don't get that message then you need to get into BIOS Setup. This is done by pressing F1, F2, F10 or the Del key every second or so once you see the computer manufacturers logo when you boot the computer.

Once in Setup, look for a Boot tab, or Boot order ot Boot priority. Set the CD drive as the first boot device , then save and exit.
