Screen Freezes for no apparent reason

Re: Screen Freezes for no apparent reason

There were no errors when installing the driver. A program is also installed, but when i double click on it, the hour glass appears for a while, then nothing. Nothing seems to happen when running it.

Okay, so I plug in the wireless device, and i let it automatically search. Two .inf files came up. I went to c:/windows/inf and track them down to see which is more recently modified. But the more recent one is dated 2006. So I just install it anyway. And wireless works fine. But in the device manager->properties, under the "driver" tab, the driver date is stated as xx/xx/2006 which is the same date as before i uninstall the previous driver.

So either, the driver was not updated, or there is no recent update for the driver? Is it right to assume that?

Anyways. It just crashed again a few minutes ago. Anything else that I can try?

    Thanks for your patience townsbg.

Ok where did you get the drivers from? You should get them from the manufacturer's website. The drivers in there are from 2007. What error message did you get? Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers? The program is the best way to install the drivers but not the only way so try that again first. If you can't get it to run browse to the Aztech WL230USB v030407\Driver\Ndis5x folder and copy the inf file and the WlanUZXP.SYS file into a separate folder. The inf file isn't the driver but contains information about the driver; the sys file is the driver. Now uninstall the current driver using device manager and reboot the computer. When XP asks you for the driver point it to the folder that you copied those files to.

If windows can't/won't uninstall the program try Perfect Uninstaller or Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Good luck.

    Hey,

Yeah, I downloaded the driver from the manufacturer's website. And I followed your second suggestion. Uninstall, reboot and reinstall, leading it to the two files which I copied out onto another folder. Installation went fine without any problem. But the driver date still says 3/29/06, Driver Version 6.6.0.0 .

And I repeat the steps again, uninstall, reboot, install. But still the same. And I reboot it again just in case. No problem with the installation, but still the same driver date.

Sorry, I dont think I can update the driver...

The wireless/internet works fine. But it still freezes.

    Any other methods to try?

Is there any website in particular that it freezes at? Have you tried a LAN line? That would be a wired connection to the router. If you can please disable the wireless and try that.

So sorry for the delay. Have been preoccupied.

Okay, there is no particular website where it freezes. Even when we are not surfing the net, just gaming, doing work or even when just left alone with no programmes opened, it freezes.

And we dont have a lan line long enough to connect to the router. The phone line is quite far from the computers, so we use the wireless router.

    Your suggestions are appreciated.

Right click on my computer --> manage --> Event Viewer --> Windows Logs --> System. Look for entries with an X. Please tell me what the most common entries are.

Also try disconnecting the connection when not online to see if it still freezes.

I don't have Windows Logs under Event Viewer, but there is Systems under Event Viewer, so I just looked under Systems.

Yeah, you're right, there is one error that is occuring quite frequently, 6 to 7 times consecutively within the same second, around 8 times within a day.

    Service Control Manager
    Category - None
    Event - 7001, 7000, when browsing quickly I also spotted a 7023
    User - N/A

And yeah, so far it doesn't freezes when we are disconnected from the internet.

    First try this:
    control panel
    administrive tools
    services
scroll down to Telephony ,on left panel click Start service
on right panel, highlight telephony, right click , select Properties, select automatic or manual click okay
If that doesn't work try following the advice on this article.
