I re-installed XP today, and it ungummed the works as I was hoping it would.
However on every restart (and there were a few) I get this rather puzzling error message.
Any ideas on what it may mean would, as ever, be appreciated.

After pressing "OK" does Windows XP still start? Does everything seem normal when you are in Windows XP?

Did you reinstall your ATI drivers?

That error is apparently an ATI driver fault.

Yes XP still starts and runs fine.

I did reinstall the ATI drivers saved in my Installers file, but given what you say I will install the drivers on the graphics accelerator disc. I will post with results. This will be a little while as I am in the middle of something atm.

Well despite installing the drivers from the graphics accelerator disc, and then from Gigabyte's site (via Driver Agent) I am still getting the same error.
Should I try to go direct to ATI?

I had a similar problem with my ATI graphics card on my laptop ( radeon mobility x1400 ) . My crash was caused by an update in SP3 . ATI drivers require the .net framework to install unlike other graphics cards . SP3 installs .net framework 3.5 and from my google readings it's the ATI catalyst drivers that normally cause the crash error . Try installing just the graphics driver without the catalyst . I did that with my laptop and the problem was resolved .

If that doesn't work for your ATI graphics card the only other piece of advice I can give is to try using the ATI Omega drivers - These are not OEM drivers but as I believe , the product of independent manufacture . I cannot comment on functionality as I never used them due to upgrade . A lot of the laptop manufactures requested no further GFX drivers support from ATI ( such as with my IBM Thinkpad ) with the mobility x1400 , ATI / AMD no longer have updated drivers , I can update those GFX drivers specifically through Lenevo support only .

If you're running a laptop , worth a try looking on the OEM's for the gfx update

Alternatively on update to SP3 uninstall the .net framework 3.5 and reinstall the .net framework 2.0 , and reinstall just graphics driver and not the catalyst from the official ATI / AMD site .

Okay,
Removed all ATI CCC, and other drivers.
All that remain are the ATI Display Driver, Uninstall Utility, and Hydravision.
No longer get the error messages however the screen is behaving weirdly, like it will make me seasick if I don't reinstall something, it "wriggles" when I scroll up or down is the best way I can describe it.
After the uninstall I restarted and Windows "found" some new hardware, then found a VGA driver for it, all by it self, quite clever ain't it?
Driver agent located 2 VGA drivers with identical IDs (when I tried to save the "secondary" to my installers file, it asked if I wanted to replace the first one, and on uninstall there was a driver and a secondary).
I no longer get the error message, but I can't cope with the monitor like it is.
Should I reinstall the primary and secondary drivers and omit CCC?

Well at least the error message has gone - Always best to have both the secondary and primary driver installed - do you have another monitor avaliable to check it's not a primary fault on the monitor . I see you're running an ATI - a useful tool mainly used for overclocking ATI cards is ATI tool - it will say how many active pipelines are being used - on a 512mb AGP - should be 4 x pixel pipelines , 512 ( PCIe ) 8 x pipelines , 1 gig ati ( PCIe ) 16 pipelines .

Check your task manager - click view > show hidden devices and expand and problem specific parts - obviously in this case monitor and display drivers . You did reinstall the chipset after reinstall ?

Check refresh rate on pc minitor - 60 - 70 .

Normally the problem you are describing is caused by fresh install without essential drivers , most normally caused by A) GFX driver B) chipset driver . Also if your using a specialised keyboard and mouse without the oem drivers this can also create similar problems as described .

Yes an idea would be disable the CCC and install the primary and secondary ATI driver . Hydravision is for TV cards as far as I know and a non requirement . Look on the Monitor oem site and see if there are any specific drivers for your monitor too

The only other possibility I can think is that possibly one of the pixel lines on the GFX has become corrupted
