Formatting C Drive and Re-Installing Windows XP

I have Windows XP on my Compaq PC, Now somehow certain Spyware came into the PC through Internet even though I had the Cyberdefender running on the PC. Now, due to the spyware the computer got a problem of restarting on running the spyware scan and on opening ebay etc.

So, I decided to reformat the C drive and reinstall Windows XP from the CD and I did exactly as what is written in your article about formatting the hard drive but after choosing the NTFS format and pressing ENTER for Windows to Install on C Drive just a few seconds later a Blue screen appeared showing: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area with the Technical Information: STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE95D5618, 0x00000000, 0x8081882C, 0x00000002)

I wonder why it showed that windows has been shut down because I had already formatted the C Drive containing the Windows XP and its reinstall was still in process.

Now, later I realized that my system was a FAT32. So, I again did the same procedure and converted it into FAT32 from NTFS but still the same screen appeared and I am unable to install the Windows XP any longer. The system's hardware is absolutely fine because I had started using it a fresh since 2 weeks back only, and it was doing wonderfully well before that spyware came in.

Please help me, what to do next as I have never seen or heard of such an error earlier. Also, I had stored my DATA from C Drive to E Drive how can I access that?

Did you follow the instructions and use the media provided by HP/Compaq to reinstall?

What is the exact Compaq model?

    Dear Jephree,

I performed a reboot from the Windows XP CD and pressed ENTER at the "Welcome to Setup" screen and then pressed F8 to agree to the license. Next, there was an option to Repair my existing installation or Install a fresh copy. So, I pressed ENTER to Install a fresh XP. Now, I pressed D to delete the C Drive Partition on which Windows XP was installed then, pressed L to confirm the delete. Later, I pressed C on the un-partitioned space to create the new partition and it already showed the maximum space available so, I pressed ENTER. Then, I chose NTFS to Format the partition. After the format as I pressed enter to go ahead with the installation of Windows XP on C Drive the Blue Screen with the STOP error appeared.

Currently, I do not have any media provided by Compaq.

    The Model is SR1720IL.

    Hope, you could help me.

    Thanks for the reply.

You cannot just install any copy of XP onto a Compaq computer. At least not with out wiping the hard drive first. Most Compaq computers have a Recovery Partition accessed via pressing F10 at startup. If yours does not then the third link here tells how to order the Recovery CD.

    Your computer:

    Compaq Presario SR1720IL Desktop PC

    Recovery from F10:

    Dear Jephree,

My PC came pre-loaded only with DOS from Compaq and the Windows XP which was running on the PC is off the same disc through which I have been trying to reboot it. What I believe is that may be because all four partitions C, D, E, and F were FAT32 and I unknowingly Formatted only the C Drive out of the four with NTFS. So, I am not sure "not a technical person" but can it be a possibility that Windows XP files were still left on the C Drive which might be creating a conflict with the Fresh Installation on the same drive.

Later, I again converetd to FAT32 hoping that may be by doing so, Windows XP might get installed but again was the same BSOD problem.

Please, shed some light on the above mentioned scenario and a possible solution for this problem.

Also, I have searched a lot on the Internet about the Technical Information: STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE95D5618, 0x00000000, 0x8081882C, 0x00000002). But, except STOP: 0x00000050 the exact code within the bracket couldn't be found, may be you can through some light on it also.

    Thanks Again

The details in the brackets are a memory address specific to your computer.

The error is described here and is most likely hardware as seen:

"Stop 0x50" Error Message While Installing Windows

Previous versions of Windows can often be a problem but they should not lead to your error which again is in hardware.

Should you wish to try I'd suggest wiping the partition (or the whole drive) and try from scratch. You can also then format outside of windows with GParted as seen here:

    GParted

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway if you use GParted: Save this download:

    SourceForge.net: GParted: Downloading ...

This is an ISO file. You will need an ISO burning program to burn it. It cannot be burnt as data as it is an image.

If you use Nero there is an option called "Create Disk Image".

If you do not have Nero you can use this free program:

    ISO Recorder v 2

This will add the burning option to your right click options or shell.

With Nero just point it to the downloaded ISO. With the other recorder just right click the ISO and choose Burn Disk Image.

A new blank CD is required.

After the burn this CD will be a boot disk and will boot GParted.

Verify that your CD drive is set to boot prior to the hard drive and boot the CD.

There are some basic tutorials on the functions and use of GParted here:

    GParted -- Documentation

    To wipe I'd suggest KillDisk:

Active@ Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser. Low Level Format.

Of course all data will be lost on the partition or drive.

Also as stated in our Rules:

There are many public forums on the Internet where you can post questions. If you choose to use D-A-L.com for technical help then please ensure you only post your questions here and at no other forum. Posting your question on multiple forums can use up valuable volunteer resources who could be helping others.
If you prefer this other forum where I am also a member I will close this thread here. Up to you.
